Convert the quantity, not just the number
A unit conversion expresses the same quantity using another scale. Prefixes, regional conventions and similarly named units can change the conversion factor, so selecting the exact source and destination units matters.
How to choose your next step
Check whether the measurement is length, area, volume, mass or another quantity. A conversion factor for length cannot be applied unchanged to area or volume.
Common questions about unit converters
Why are some conversions not simple multiplication?
Some scales include an offset as well as a factor. Temperature scales are a familiar example, so use the appropriate formula for the selected units.
Can more decimal places make a measurement more accurate?
No. Extra displayed digits do not add precision to the original measurement. Keep rounding consistent with the accuracy of the input.
