## Tool capabilities

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Tool ID | `discount-profitability-calculator` |
| Category | business-tools |
| Implementation | Registered implementation. Registration alone is not a production-quality guarantee. |
| Browser execution | Use the visible action or interactive controls. |
| Browser processing | Browser; see tool notes for network behavior. |
| HTTP API | Not callable through HTTP. |
| Browser-agent interface | run_current_tool |

### Implementation notes

For each discount the required volume change is the lost price divided by the contribution left per unit. Unit cost is treated as fully variable. Discounted prices are rounded to the currency decimal places. Processing stays on your device.

### Inputs and settings

No free-text input is required. Use the file inputs and/or settings below.

| Setting | Meaning | Control type | Default | Constraints |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `price` | List price per unit | text | "50.00" | |
| `unitCost` | Variable cost per unit | text | "30.00" | |
| `discounts` | Discounts to test (%) | text | "10; 20; 25; 40" | |
| `currency` | Currency code | text | "USD" | |
| `precision` | Currency decimal places | select | "2" | Allowed: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 |
| `rounding` | Rounding | select | "half-up" | Allowed: half-up, half-even, half-down, down, up, floor, ceiling |

### Browser-agent workflow

1. Open the human page in a browser that supports WebMCP.
2. Discover the interface exposed by that page; use its actual schema.
3. Select files on the page first when the tool requires files.
4. Call `run_current_tool` with valid input and settings.
5. Inspect the returned result or error and the displayed output. Retrieve files from the displayed download links.

Calls do not automatically copy or download results. Browser permissions still apply. Interface availability alone is not proof of successful execution.

### Planning specification

Price and cost up to 1,000,000,000,000 with up to the selected currency decimal places (0 to 6). 1 to 20 different discounts from 0.01 to 99.99 percent with at most two decimal places. Calculated on your device. Download a JSON report and CSV files.

This describes intended requirements. Use the implementation notes, interface schema and observed output to determine current support.

## Page guide

Test several discounts against your price and unit cost. See the contribution left per unit and the sales volume increase each discount needs to keep the same gross profit.

### How to use Discount profitability calculator

1. Enter the list price and the variable cost per unit.
2. List the discounts to test, separated by semicolons or spaces.
3. Choose the currency and rounding, then calculate.
4. Compare the required volume increase for each discount and download the table.

## Volume needed to stand still

With a 50.00 price and a 30.00 unit cost, each sale contributes 20.00. A 20 percent discount leaves 10.00, so you need to sell twice as many units, a 100 percent increase, to earn the same contribution. The required increase is the price reduction divided by the contribution left per unit, the breakeven sales change described in Nagle and Müller, The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing, 6th edition (Routledge, 2018).

### When a discount cannot pay

If a discount is as large as the contribution margin, nothing is left per unit and no volume increase can recover the profit, so those rows show no result. The calculation treats unit cost as fully variable and ignores fixed costs, cannibalization and competitor reactions. Discounted prices are rounded to the currency decimal places before contribution is calculated.
